NOW YOU SEE IT, NOW YOU DON’T

IS IT MAGIC…OR IS IT AN OPTICAL ILLUSION?

WHAT YOU NEED

6 ounces glycerin

Water

2 empty 2-ounce condiment bottles (such as Tabasco sauce) with the labels removed

2 glasses

Funnel

HOW TO DO IT

1.Using the funnel, fill one bottle with water, and the other with glycerin.

2.Fill one water glass halfway with water. Fill the other glass halfway with glycerin.

3.Place the bottle of water into the glass of water.

4.Put the bottle of glycerin into the glass of glycerin.

5.Look through the glasses. What differences do you see?

WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?

In another experiment (see page 68) we learned about how light travels through transparent materials, hits a surface, and travels back to our eyes. In this case, the water, the glass, and glycerin have different densities. When you put a bottle of water into a glass of water, the light travels through the glass at a different speed and angle than it does the water. It bends at each intersection as it returns to our eyes. This allows us to see the edges of the inner bottle and the water between them. When you put a bottle of glycerin into a glass of glycerin, the bottle seems to disappear. That’s because light travels through glycerin at the same speed and angle as the glass containers. The result is that the part of the bottle in the liquid seems to disappear before your eyes.
